Thor's Meal Plan: What Chris Hemsworth Ate For Love And Thunder

The new Thor movie is a bit different than the rest.  As such, Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, wanted to be in even better shape (i.e. bigger) than he was in previous movies.

This was a challenge because he had leaned down to play other roles.  So he turned to a hefty meal plan created by his chef to support his goals in the months leading up to filming.

Chris Hemsworth's Meal Plan Highlights

  • Thor's stuntman, Bobby Holland Hanton, followed a very similar routine and even hung out with Chris most of the time before and during filming
  • They ate 6 to 10 meals a day.  It depends on the article you read, and probably the day
  • Each meal was about 450 calories
  • Lots of veggies, meat, and rice show up in basically every meal
  • Steak is his favorite protein, but he rotated through the animal kingdom to mix it up
  • His minimal supplement routine included protein powder, BCAA's, and magnesium/zinc
  • He didn't eat meat the day they filmed (spoiler alert) the kiss scene because Natalie Portman is vegan and Chris wanted to respect that.  Pretty cool
  • The rare cheat meal was meat lovers pizza, ice cream, chocolate, etc
  • Bobby, stuntman, allowed himself 2 hours a week to just pound whatever junk food he could get his hands on
  • Chris Hemsworth started a health and fitness company called Centr with his chef, stuntman, and trainer to share his love of health and fitness
  • A go-to shake he likes to do is a banana, two dates, almond milk, and a scoop of protein

  • He uses a stuntman who follows a similar diet, Bobby Holland Hanton
  • Chris Hemsworth’s trainer Luke Zocchi
  • Zocchi said. “He eats, like, six to eight meals a day.”
  • “We’ve kind of got a structure. He found if he eats a really big meal he, like, feels too heavy, so they’re 450-calorie meals broken up into the eight,” Zocchi said. “We try to eat every two hours and getting 450 calories in [each time].”
  • “I usually just keep running him food all day,” he said, joking, “I’m like his grandmother just giving him food.”
  • He does a variety of workout styles like HIIT, Bodybuilding, and everything in between

  • On a social post in this article his trainer said he eats about 10 meals a day.  It must vary between 6 and 10 depending
  • "He's really nice. The day we had a kiss scene he didn't eat meat that morning because I'm vegan. And he eats meat like every half hour. Like, that was so thoughtful. That's not something I'm angry about or care about, but he was just being thoughtful. He's just a very nice person."

  • "Chris' day always starts with a large green shake made up of 5-6 different types of leafy greens and vegetables, low-glycemic fruits, nuts, seeds, fats and small amounts of sea salt to aid in electrolyte balance, nerve transmission and glucose metabolism," Sergio Perera, a chef who works with Hemsworth, told Men's Health.

  • "The way I go about it is, eat til you feel sick," Hemsworth said.
  • "He's a big fan of steak. So, steak, some good carbs a la brown rice, sweet potatoes," said Zocchi. "If we weren't so organized, he'd definitely have a protein shake... A go-to shake he likes to do is a banana, two dates, almond milk, and a scoop of protein."

  • “With the months leading up to the shoot and during filming, I’m basically overfeeding myself on protein and endless amounts of chicken breast, eggs, steak, fish, vegetables, tuna, avocado, cottage cheese, and brown rice.”
  • His chef shared a detailed meal plan on this website

Bobby Holland Hanton gained about 22 pounds of muscle in a stunning transformation.

  • The video shows his warmup
  • It seems like Chris and Bobby trained together
  • Hanton said that he wound up training two or three times daily during the prep period, and packed on weight with meals filled with protein from eggs, tuna, lean turkey, lamb, chicken, and steak using recipes from the Centr app.
  • "Chris decided he wanted to be the biggest Thor yet as he has also been training hard—as he always does—so this has been my biggest physical transformation to date," he says. "I am having to lift heavy—the heaviest I’ve ever had to lift—but also doing a lot of my own bodyweight circuit stuff, almost like a CrossFit/plyo fusion to stay mobile and agile in my stunts, fights, etc. (which is similar to my plyo workouts on Centr). And it’s still very hard to get anywhere near Chris Hemsworth’s shape!"

  • He would have a 2 hour window once a week to eat as much junk as he could
